In-Depth Information
The 50km hike to Halti fell (1328m), the highest point in Finland, is a rewarding, reason-
ably well-marked trip. There are several wilderness cabins along the route with reservable
sections. You can get close to it by road through Norway.
Scenic Flights
There's a heliport at the southern end of Kilpisjärvi, and a float-plane dock alongside.
Sightseeing flights cost €200 to €250 for a spin around Saana and the treble border, or
€450 to €600 for flights around Halti. For information, call Polar-Lento ( 0400-396-087;
www.harriniva.fi ) for float-planes, or Heliflite ( 0400-155-111; www.heliflite.fi ) for choppers.
Sleeping
Lining the main road are several campsites with cabins. Many places are only open during
the trekking season, which is mid-June to September. As well as the hotel and
Retkeilykeskus, several of the cabin complexes have their own cafe-restaurant, usually
only open during the day.
