In-Depth Information
The upstairs restaurant of the Hotel Santa Claus has a double identity. The Gaissa menu
has petite, reindeer-heavy dishes aimed at visitors: there are some great creations. The
ZoomUp bar menu has a lunch buffet and salads, pastas, steaks, ribs and snacks like potato
wedges, aimed at pulling a local crowd.
Monte Rosa FINNISH

Attached to the City Hotel, this goes for the romance vote with a low candlelit interior and
chummy booth seating. Good-sized portions of Finnish and Lapland fare are very tasty;
there's plenty of reindeer and local fish. Downstairs, the Bull Bar serves ribs and huge bur-
gers out of the same kitchen.
Drinking & Nightlife
Excluding ski resorts, Rovaniemi is the only place north of Oulu with a half-decent night-
life.
Kauppayhtiö CAFE, BAR
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; www.facebook.com/kauppayhtio ;Valtakatu 24; 11am-8pm Mon-Thu,
11am-4am Fri & Sat; )
Rovaniemi's most personable cafe, this is an oddball collection of retro curios with a cof-
fee and gasoline theme and colourful plastic tables. All the knick-knacks are purportedly
for sale here, but it's the espresso machine, charismatic outdoor lounge and stage area,
salads, rolls, burgers, Wednesday-to-Sunday sushi, sundaes and bohemian Lapland crowd
that keep the place ticking
There are often bands on weekends. The coffee is bottomless.
Roy Club BAR, CLUB
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; www.royclub.fi ;Maakuntakatu 24; 10pm-4am)
This friendly bar has a sedate, comfortable top half with cosy seating, cheap and long
happy hours, and regular karaoke. There's also a downstairs nightclub that gets cheerily
boisterous with students and stays open late.
