Right by the major slopes in the centre of town, this huge complex aims to please every-
one from conferencing execs to snowball-lobbing families, and largely succeeds, thanks to
plenty of facilities and a wide variety of rooms. Standard rooms are fine, though a long
hike from reception. Superiors have balconies and are much more spacious. Both have
drying cupboards. Down the road are capacious duplex apartments. Its restaurant, bars and
nightclub are the heart of Ruka nightlife in the ski and autumn ruska seasons.
Eating & Drinking
Near the tourist office in Kuusamo are several giant supermarkets where you can stock up
on trekking or cottage supplies.
Martai FINNISH
( GOOGLE MAP ;Airotie, Kuusamo;lunches €7-10; 10am-3pm Mon-Fri)
In an unattractive industrial area not far from the tourist office (look behind the ABC ser-
vice station), this place keeps lunching workers happy with excellent, very authentic hot
dishes. Sautéed reindeer and fried vendace (whitefish) are typical choices; there's also a
plate for kids.
Riipisen Riistaravintola GAME
( 08-868-1219; www.ruka.fi ; Kelo, Ruka;mains €16-45; 1-9pm Mon-Sat)
At the Kelo ski-lift area, a five-minute walk from Ruka's main square, this friendly log
cabin has an attractively rustic interior. It specialises in game dishes, and you'll find
Rudolf, Bullwinkle and, yes, poor Yogi (€61) on the menu here in various guises, depend-
ing on availability and season. Arctic hare also features, while capercaillie in a creamy
sauce will get bird lovers twitching too.
