Oulu's art museum is a bright spacious gallery with excellent temporary exhibitions of
both international and Finnish contemporary art, and a cafe.
Ainola & Huupisaaret PARK
( MAP GOOGLE MAP )
Just north of the city centre and connected by small bridges, this great park has bike paths,
museums, greenhouses and a summer cafe, as well as a fishway built so that salmon can
bypass the hydroelectric dam to get to the spawning grounds.
Merimiehen Kotimuseo MUSEUM
(Matila; MAP
GOOGLE MAP ; www.ouka.fi/ppm ; Pikisaarentie 6; 11am-5pm late May-early Sep)
This house-museum on Pikisaari belonged to a local sailor. Built in 1737, it is the oldest
house in Oulu and was transferred here from the city centre in 1983. The wallpaper and
extendable bed are typical of 19th-century Finnish homes.
Activities
One of Oulu's best features is the extensive network of bicycle paths crossing bridges,
waterways and islands all the way out to surrounding villages. Grab a cycle map from the
tourist office.
A good 3km walk or ride is from the kauppatori, across the bridge to Pikisaari and
across another bridge to Nallikari, where there's a lovely beach facing the Gulf of Bothnia.
Tours
From late June to late August, bus tours and free walking tours in English leave from the
town hall: check www.oulunseudunoppaat.fi for times.
