Kauppatori
SQUARE
Oulu has the liveliest market square of all Finnish towns, and its position at the waterfront
makes it all the more appealing. The square is bordered by several old wooden storehouses
now serving as restaurants, bars and craft shops. The squat
Toripolliisi
statue, a humorous
representation of the local police, is a local landmark.
Tietomaa
MUSEUM
6pm or 8pm)
This huge, excellent science museum can occupy kids for the best part of a day with a gi-
ant IMAX screen, hands-on interactive exhibits on planets and the human body, and an ob-
servation tower. Each year there is a mega-exhibition that's the focal point.
Pohjois Pohjanmaan Museo
MUSEUM
10am-5pm Tue-Sun)
The Museum of Northern Ostrobothnia in the city park has almost too much information
to take in at first bite. It covers the earliest habitation of the region through to the 20th cen-
tury, including plenty of information on the tar trade. Cameras allow you to zoom in on the
impressive scale model of 1938 Oulu; a traditional pharmacy, paintings of the 1822 Great
Fire, and a schoolroom are included in the wide-ranging display.
Oulun Tuomiokirkko
CHURCH
Oulu's imposing cathedral was built in 1777 but then came the great fire of 1822, which
severely damaged the structure. Tireless architect CL Engel rebuilt it in Empire style,
adding a dome and Renaissance-style vaulting, which impart a powerful airiness to the
fairly unadorned interior.
