Vanha Kirkko CHURCH
(Old Church; www.ukisrk.fi ; Kirkkokatu 2; 11am-5pm Mon-Sat, noon-4pm Sun Jun-mid-Aug)
The lovely 17th-century Vanha Kirkko is one of Uusikaupunki's highlights. Its star-
speckled, barrel-vaulted roof was built to resemble a ship's hull and its interior has re-
tained the original rustic furniture. The new church was built when architects suspected the
original was unstable, and its construction practically bankrupted both the parish and the
widow who commissioned RW Ekman's vast altarpieces. Outside are the neatly tended
graves of young Finns who died during the Winter War.
