Nurmes
013 / Pop 8360
On the northern shores of Lake Pielinen, Nurmes is a great base for activities such as
snowmobiling, ice-fishing, dog-sledding and cross-country skiing tours in winter, and
wildlife-watching, canoeing, hiking and more come summer. Karelia Expert takes book-
ings (at least 24 hours in advance) for most services; Hyvärilä and Sokos Hotel Bomba
also offer a huge range of high-energy activities.
Founded in 1876 by Tsar Alexander II, the town is pleasant in its own right, with an Old
Town area (Puu-Nurmes) of historical wooden buildings along Kirkkokatu.

Bomba Village VILLAGE
( 020-123-4908;Tuulentie 10)
The centrepiece of this re-created Karelian 'village' at Sokos Hotel Bomba is the imposing
Bomba Talo , with its high roof and ornate wooden trim. It's a replica of a typical 19th-
century Karelian family house and was completed in 1978. It now houses the Bomban
Talo restaurant and eating here is the only way to see inside. Outside are craft studios and
a summertime market.
Sleeping & Eating
The best places to stay are around the lake, about 3.5km east of the town centre.
