In-Depth Information
The circular Pankasaari Route from Nurmijärvi village can easily be done with a free
route guide, available from Karelia Expert. It follows the Lieksajoki downstream to Panka-
järvi, then rounds Pankasaari before returning to Nurmijärvi. There's almost no gradient
and it's suitable for beginners - only the Käpykoski might present a challenge.
The beautiful wilderness river Jongunjoki has nearly 40 small rapids, none of them
very tricky. Karelia Expert has a free route guide. You can start at either Jonkeri up north
(in the municipality of Kuhmo), further south at Teljo bridge, at Aittokoski, or even at
Lake Kaksinkantaja. Allow four days if you start at Jonkeri and one day from Lake Kak-
sinkantaja.
Fishing
The Forest and Park Service controls fish quantities in three lakes in the Änäkäinen fishing
area, 8km northeast of Nurmijärvi village, including some stocking of the waters. Fishing
is allowed year-round, except in the first three weeks of May. Kahvila Annukka (
040-964-1083;Nurmijärventie 154) has fishing permits (per day/week in summer €8/30). Per-
mits are also available from the Lieksan Retkiaitta outdoor shop in Lieksa.
