In-Depth Information
It's an easy 3.5km stroll through forests and wetlands to the southern shore of Suomun-
järvi from the main road, where you'll find a birdwatching tower at Teretinniemi.
There are three marked nature trails (between 3km and 4.5km long), and several chal-
lenging hiking routes (mostly half-day walks). In winter cross-country skiing is possible
on the unmaintained Mäntypolku and Nämänpuro Trails , which both start from Suomu
car park.
Suomu Information Hut ( 013-548-506; 10am-5pm daily Jun-Aug, 10am-5pm Wed-Sun
May & Sep) has a summer warden who can help with advice, fishing permits and maps, and
point you towards the eight camping areas. You can hire canoes and rowboats here (per
hour/day €8/30; cash only), and make bookings for accommodation: there are nine beds
(per night €12) in the information hut itself and 20 beds in the old forest ranger's house
(per night €12).
Wild Nordic ( 030-502-502; www.villipohjola.fi ) can also book cabins in and around the
park.
Getting There & Away
The only way to get to the national park is to drive. Or walk - if you're trekking, the Susi-
taival (Wolf's Trail) and Karhunpolku (Bear's Trail) meet at the park.
