Getting There & Away
Koli Hill has road access with a short funicular ( 7am-10pm) ride from the lower car
park up to the Sokos Hotel Koli (you can also drive to the hotel's upper car park).
In winter, when the ice is thick enough, an ice road (Finland's longest at 7km) crosses
the lake from Vuonislahti to Loma-Koli, 8.5km east of Koli village, providing a shortcut of
60km.
BOAT
In summer the best way to arrive is by lake ferry (MF Pielinen; 0400-228-435; www.pielis-
laivat.fi ;one way adult/child/car/bicycle €18/10/12/5) from Lieksa.
BUS
Buses run to Koli kylä (village) from Joensuu (€13.70, 1½ hours, five daily), some via a
change in Ahmovaara, 9km west of Koli.
SHARED TAXI
A shared taxi ( 040-104-4687) service operates year-round between Joensuu and Koli,
with three taxis per day (€15 to €45 depending on time/day of travel).
Paalasmaa
013
Panoramic Paalasmaa is the largest island in Lake Pielinen and the highest in Finland at
225m above sea level. It's linked to the mainland by a free ferry in summer and ice road in
winter; bridges continue the journey through two smaller islands tucked behind it.
The best view is from the 18m-high wooden observation tower , 3km along a marked
trail from the island's campground Paalasmaan Lomamajat ( 040-088-2008;
www.paalasmaancamping.fi ;tent sites €20, cabins €40-50; Jun-mid-Aug) - a gorgeous water-
side spot on the island's eastern tip that rents rowboats (per day €10) and canoes (per hour
€5).
