WORTH A TRIP
LEMI
The tiny village of Lemi, 25km west of Lappeenranta, is synonymous with its signature
dishlemin särä(roast mutton). Hailed as one of the seven wonders of Finland, it's cooked
in a birch trough to infuse the meat with a sweet, woody flavour and takes nine hours to
prepare so you'll need to book at least two days in advance.
The best place to sample it is the lakeshore restaurant Säräpirtti Kippurasarvi (
05-414-6470; www.sarapirtti.fi ;Rantatie 1;adult/child €32/16; see website for serving times),
which serves nothing butlemin särä,accompanied by thick rye bread and homemade
kalja(beer).
Imatra
05 / Pop 28,320
Imatra was once the darling of Russian aristocracy - one of the first tourists to the area
was Catherine the Great who in 1772 gathered her entourage to view Imatra's thundering
rapids. Although the rapids were harnessed for hydroelectricity in 1929, the water pours
forth again during dramatic daily summer shows.
The town has a number of dispersed 'centres', mostly brassy and modern and all separ-
ated by kilometres of highway. Imatrankoski, the site of the rapids, is of most interest to
visitors and has the majority of services. Boaties, beach goers and spa babes may prefer
the Imatran leisure area, 7km northwest of Imatrankoski.
