Have it stewed, fried, smoked or in a soup, but it's all about muikku here. This is one of
Finland's most famous spots to try the small lakefish that drives Savo stomachs. The
70-year-old restaurant is cosy, and classically Finnish.

Set in a beautifully renovated former bank - look out for the old strongroom - this is an el-
egant but informal spot for a meal, with Mediterranean-inspired dishes from a variety of
countries as well as some Finnish specialities. There's a good enclosed terrace at the side
and a decent pub downstairs.

One of Finland's best restaurants, the Black Sheep has a golden fleece. Set in an enchant-
ingly romantic brick-vaulted space, it offers a short menu of delicious gourmet mains us-
ing top-quality Finnish meat and fish, with complex sauces that complement but never
overpower the natural flavours. Wines include a fabulous selection of generously priced
special bottles (healthy credit card required). There's also a roof terrace.
Drinking & Nightlife
Kuopio's nightlife is conveniently strung along Kauppakatu, running east from the market
square to the harbour. Here, grungy, popular and likeable Ale Pupi ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ;
www.alepupi.fi ;Kauppakatu 16; 9am-1am Mon, 9am-2am Tue-Sat, 9am-midnight Sun) has a huge
interior, surprisingly classy decor and big drawcards of cheap beer and karaoke, but there
are many other options in this block, some with summer terraces.
