Readers love this handsome old farmhouse 13km north of Savonlinna. It's run by a genial
Finnish family and has large grounds, a wood and lake to explore. Accommodation runs
across a variety of buildings and ranges from simple rustic summer rooms, to elegant en-
suite chambers with period features; cabins and cottages are also available. An excellent
rural Finnish experience. Meals available in summer.

Charmingly situated on an island across a footbridge from the kauppatori, this is old-fash-
ioned in parts but a good option. Nearly all rooms have a balcony; those that don't have
their own sauna. Some have dreamy outlooks west over water. Try for a recently renovated
room. Guests have access to the spa facilities; nonguests can use them for €10 in the after-
noons.
The terrace bar is lively in summer.
Sokos Hotel Seurahuone
HOTEL
Towering over the kauppatori, this friendly hotel offers a bit of everything; its rooms have
views, big flatscreen TVs, sofas, sober but updated decor and decent little bathrooms. The
top-floor bar has great views and fries up
muikku
(vendace, or whitefish, a small lake fish);
however, the restaurant has disappointing food. Weekend prices are good but opera prices
are substantially higher.
