In-Depth Information
Very handy for the train station, this curious guesthouse has compact singles and twins
with washbasin, TV and cheery aquamarine sheets on the beds. Some rooms have bunks;
front rooms are airier but the street's pretty noisy. There's free tea and coffee and a bun in
the morning. Phone ahead for Sunday arrivals as reception isn't open.
Omenahotelli
HOTEL
With a great location on the central square, this staffless hotel makes a value-packed place
to stay. Book online or via the terminal in the lobby. Rooms have a double bed and two
fold-outs. If its full, there's a similar hotel run by Forenom in the same building.
Eating & Drinking
The place to enjoy the summer sunshine is down at the harbour where a number of beer
terraces, boat bars, cute cafes in wooden warehouses and the old station building, and an
historic lake-ship-turned-ice-cream kiosk draw the crowds.
Café Sinuhe
CAFE, BAKERY
9am-4pm Sat, 10am-4pm Sun; )
Half a block from the kauppatori, this is Lahti's best central cafe, with folk streaming in at
all hours to sip mellow coffee, fork-up salads bursting with fresh things or buy a loaf of
crusty bread.
Mamma Maria
ITALIAN
11am-10pm Mon-Thu, 11am-11pm Fri, noon-11pm Sat, noon-9pm Sun)
With a range of risottos, chicken, pastas and pizzas as well as horse steaks, this Italian eat-
ery on the kauppatori is a firm Lahti favourite. Quantities are generous and the food's tasty
enough, particularly the homemade gelati.
