A history of skis includes excavated examples from 2000 years ago. The fun starts in the
next room: frustrate yourself on the ski-jump simulator, then try the biathlon: skiing on
Velcro before nailing five bulls-eyes. In summer take the chairlift up to the observation
terrace ( GOOGLE MAP ;adult/child €6/3, incl Hiihtomuseo €10/5; 10am-5pm Mon-Fri,
11am-5pm Sat-Sun Jun-Aug) at the top of the ski jump; great if there's someone practising,
and good for the views in any event.

Lahti's historical museum is in a beautiful old manor house by the bus station. Changing
exhibitions illustrate aspects of Lahti's history, while the middle floor is mostly devoted to
the collection of former diplomat Klaus Holma. It's a treasury of French and Italian reli-
gious art, rococo furniture and fine porcelain; excellent interactive screens allow you to ac-
cess detailed information on every piece.

This radio and television museum, on a hill by the radio mast just south of the town centre,
has an interesting history of those appliances in the basement. The entrance level has a
feast of interactive exhibits. Some, like classic '60s Finnish TV hits, won't keep you long,
but the kids will love the chance to record their own radio show, or to find out why weath-
er reporters can't wear blue.
Ristinkirkko CHURCH

This striking church was designed by Alvar Aalto and finished in 1978. The brick exterior
and concrete steeple give little clue as to the interior, a white and airy triangular space with
