Tiiliholvi FINNISH
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 020-766-9061; www.tiiliholvi.fi ; Kauppakatu 10;mains €29-36;
11am-3pm & 5-11pm Mon-Thu, 11am-3pm & 5pm-midnight Fri, 3pm-midnight Sat)
Set in the brick vaulted cellar of a Jugendstil (art nouveau) building, Tiiliholvi is into its
fifth decade. It's still old-fashioned in feel, but the food isn't, and there are some excellent
flavour combinations, along with beautiful presentation and personal explanations by the
chef if the restaurant's not too busy.
Bertha MODERN FINNISH
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 0400-355-477; www.bertha.fi ;Rautatienkatu 14;2/3 courses €37/43;
4.30-9pm Tue-Fri, 1-9pm Sat)
Cheerful rather than formal, this restaurant presents high-class fare with modern principles
and avant-garde flavour combinations without too much frippery. Inventive fish dishes are
reliably excellent, and beware of filling up on the delicious home-baked organic bread. A
couple of glitches - charging for tap water? - let it down. Book; it doesn't like walk-ins.
Drinking & Nightlife
Panimoravintola Plevna and Tuulensuu are also fine places for a beer or two.
Café Europa BAR
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; www.ravintola.fi/europa ;Aleksanterinkatu 29; noon-midnight Mon-Tue,
noon-2am Wed-Thu, noon-3am Fri & Sat, 1pm-midnight Sun; )
Lavishly furnished with horsehair couches, armchairs, mirrors, chandeliers and paintings,
this successfully fuses a re-creation of a 1930s-style old-Europe cafe, and is a popular
meeting spot for students and anyone else who appreciates comfort, board games, Belgian
and German beers, and generously proportioned sandwiches and salads. There's good
summer seating out the front.
