Viking Market CULTURAL

The best chance to see Åland's Viking heritage is at Saltvik's annual Viking Market, a
three-day festival of feasting, drinking and costumed merrymaking in late July.

Getting There & Away
Bus 3 runs from Mariehamn to Kvarnbo (€3.20, 35 minutes) and other villages in Saltvik.
A private bicycle ferry, Kajo ( 040-078-3086; www.alandstrafiken.ax ; adult/child €10/5;
departs Västra Simskäla 11am & Tengsödavik 11.30am late Jun-mid-Aug by request) , travels
between Tengsödavik, Saltvik, and Västra Simskäla, Vårdö, once daily each way; call
ahead to confirm.
Geta

The main attraction of Åland's 'apple basket', Geta, is Getabergen , a formidable peak of
98m, with a nature trail (2km) aimed at kids, and a longer trail (5.5km) leading to
Djupviksgrottan, a spacious natural grotto.
Bus 2 runs from Mariehamn to Geta (€3.80, 45 minutes) Monday to Friday via Godby.
