In-Depth Information
Mariehamn's cafes serve the local speciality,
Ålandspannkaka
(Åland pancakes): the real
deal is a fluffy semolina square served with stewed prunes (not strawberry jam). Look out
in local markets for
Ålands svartbröd
(Åland dark bread), a malt fruit loaf that takes four
days to make and complements
sill
(pickled herring) and light local cheeses.
Some outer islands have limited general stores: Mariehamn may be your best chance to
stock up.

Wood-panelled walls, scrubbed pine floors, and pink geraniums on the windowsills
provide a charming backdrop for homemade soups, salads, quiches, pies and cakes
(scattered with flower petals and far too pretty to eat!) made from local, often organic pro-
duce. Nothing is too much trouble for the friendly staff.

Smakbyn
, recently shifted his smuggler-named
plåtbröd
(Åland-style pizza) restaurant
from the west harbour here to Mariehamn's maritime quarter. Condiments are homemade,
cheese is from Åland's dairy, and toppings include cold smoked salmon and horseradish
cream. There are also meal-sized baked potatoes and salads.
