In-Depth Information
Built in Sweden in 1960, the enormous passenger ship S/S Bore is docked outside the For-
um Marinum museum, just 500m northeast of the ferry terminal. It now contains an
award-winning HI-affiliated hostel with vintage ensuite cabins. Most are squishy but if
you want room to spread out, higher-priced doubles have a lounge area. Rates include a
morning sauna.

Glowing white and run by nuns, this Catholic convent's guest wing is a haven of peace:
public areas are silent after 10pm, and the place has a general air of respectful hush. Its
small rooms are austere, but cleanliness clearly goes with the godliness. Cash only.

Overlooking a hilly park, this art nouveau building is a genuine character, with a resident
squawking parrot, Jaakko, and classical music playing in the lift (elevator). Rooms are
decorated in a lovably chintzy style and equipped with minibars. Family owners and facil-
ities such as a lounge with pool table make it the antithesis of a chain hotel.

Next door to the bus station, family-owned Helmi (literally, 'pearl') has 34 autumnal-hued
soundproofed rooms with minifridges, comfy mattresses and good-sized bathrooms. If
you're catching an overnight ferry or late-night flight, day rooms (€55) are available.
