One of the most significant museums along this road; the sizeable Karelian-inspired log-
built studio and home of Pekka Halonen has changing exhibition of works by him and his
contemporaries. It's a lovely place with great views and a lakeside garden.

This striking blue building commemorates the Lotta women's voluntary defence force.
Named for a character in a JL Runeberg poem, these unarmed women took on military ser-
vice during WWII to become one of the world's largest auxiliaries. Look out for the blue-
and-white swastika and rose medals, which many Lottas wore among the military
paraphernalia.

Hotelli Krapi HOTEL
( 09-274841; www.krapi.fi ;Rantatie 2;s/d €128/155; )
Belying its name, this historic red wooden estate, 2km north of Tuusula, features an excel-
lent independent hotel in a former cowshed. It has great modern rooms, three restaurants, a
traditional smoke sauna, golf course, summer theatre and a ghost. Various activity pack-
ages are available; it's a lot cheaper in summer and on weekends.
Getting There & Away
Tuusulanjärvi is 35km north of Helsinki. Buses running between Helsinki and Järvenpää
drop off at or near most of the museums; you could also make a bike tour of it, getting the
train to Kerava and back from Järvenpää.
