Officially Finland's second-largest city, Espoo (Swedish: Esbo) is part of greater Helsinki,
with a commuter flood between the two. The city is known for its 'campus feel', with
plenty of green space and spread-out environs. There are five distinct centres and many
suburbs.

Espoo Museum of Modern Art GALLERY
(EMMA; www.emma.museum ;Ahertajantie 5, Tapiola;adult/child €12/free; 11am-6pm Tue, Thu, Fri,
11am-8pm Wed, 11am-5pm Sat & Sun)
This has a huge collection of mostly Finnish modern art, ranging from the early 20th cen-
tury to the present. It's definitely worth the trip from Helsinki. Sharing the same address
and opening hours, and visitable with the same ticket, are four other museums that can
round out a day trip. Several buses from Kamppi pass by here.
Gallen-Kallelan Museo GALLERY

mid-May-Aug, 11am-4pm Tue-Sat, 11am-5pm Sun Sep-mid-May)
Part castle, part studio, this was the home of Akseli Gallen-Kallela, one of Finland's most
significant artists. Many of his works are displayed here including his famed Kalevala il-
lustrations. The peace of the lakeside location is a little disturbed these days by the whoosh
of the nearby Helsinki-Turku motorway but it remains a worthwhile visit. From Helsinki
take tram 4 to its terminus then walk 2km.
Haltia NATURE CENTRE
