this acclaimed hotel and restaurant has tastefully deco-

dated rooms in a lovely Grade II-listed Victorian house on

W bazpackershostel.co.uk. The most cosy and relaxed of
the city's hostels, with more than thirty beds, including
three doubles and two twins; some dorms are mixed. Good
location, great vi ews and a garden, wh ich is used for
barbecues. Dorms £17 ; twins/doubles £40
Inverness Tourist Hostel 24 Rose St T 01463 241962,
W invernesshostel.com. Cheap, conveniently located hostel
near the bus station, with cheery, helpful staff. The downside
is that the dorms are a little must y, an d there's a slightly
institutional feel to the place. Dorms £10
Inverness Youth Hostel Victoria Drive, off Millburn
Rd, about three-quarters of a mile east of the centre

large kitchens and communal areas, plus six-bed family
rooms and cheap singles in addition to the usual dorms.

the centre, run by former hoteliers. Has a good choice of
spotlessly clean rooms and a friendly resident cat. Book

W moyness.co.uk. Warm, welcoming, upmarket B&B on
the west side of Inverness, with original Victori an f eatures
(it was built in 1880) and a nice walled garden. £78
CAMPSITE
Bught Caravan and Camping Site Bught Park, a mile
south of the centre T 01463 236920, W inverness
caravanpark.com. Inverness's main campsite on the west
bank of the river near the sports centre. Has good facilities,
but it can get ver y crowded at the height of the season.

239947. Prise yourself away from the old books and maps
at Scotland's largest used bookshop to enjoy a cup of tea
or a warming bowl of soup (£3.30) at the upstairs café.

Rendezvous Café 14A Church St T 01463 718444.
Good lattes (£2.40) are served inside and out at this café,
one of the more relaxed places for coffee and a snack in the
city centre. Mon-Sat 8am-5pm, Sun 9am-4pm.

Café 1 75 Castle St T 01463 226200, W cafe1.net. You'll
find contemporary cooking - like grilled chicken with
rocket, pineapple and balsamic vinegar - in a bistro-style
setting here. The restaurant's beef, lamb and pork is reared
on a croft 8 miles north of Inverness. At £12.50 for two
courses, the “early bird” menu (Mon-Fri noon-6.45pm
& Sat noon-2.30pm) is good value. Mon-Fri noon-
9.30pm, Sat noon-2.30pm & 6-9.30pm.
Joy of Taste 25 Church St T 01463 241459, W thejoyof
taste.co.uk. Sparkly green cloths cover Joy of Taste 's tables,
which are worked by a team of volunteers, each of whom
has a stake in the restaurant's success. The lunch menu, with
pork sausages and mash for £5.95, represents superb value.
Refreshingly different. Daily: noon-3pm & 5pm-late.
