Nearby, the engrossing Working Sheepdogs demonstrations at Leault Farm afford
the rare opportunity to see a champion shepherd herd a flock of sheep with up to
eight dogs, using whistles and other commands. The fascinating 45-minute-long
display also includes a chance to see traditional hand-shearing, duck-herding and
collie-pup training.

Grantown-on-Spey
Around fifteen miles northeast of Aviemore, the pretty town of GRANTOWN-ON-SPEY
makes a good alternative base for exploring the Strathspey area. Local life is
concentrated around the central square, with its attractive Georgian architecture, but
there are plenty of opportunities for hiking and biking in the immediate area.

By bus Buses from Aviemore (roughly hourly; 35min) and
Inverness (at least 2 per day Mon-Sat; 1hr 10min) stop on
Grantown-on-Spey's High St.

Bike rental Good bikes and decent coffee at BaseCamp

the Co-op convenience store on the town's main square.

Lazy Duck Hostel A few miles south of town, at Nethy

EATING
Craig Bar Woodside Ave T 01479 872669. Snug pub full
of military aviation memorabilia, from pictures of fighter
planes to dangling model aircraft. Warm yourself by the fire
with a pint of real ale, and choose some food. The choice is
made easy: the jovial landlord only sells pies (£7.50).

Revack Highland Estate 2 miles south of town on the
B970 T 01479 872234. At this café-cum-gift-shop on
the 350-acre Revack estate you can watch red squirrels at
play as you tuck into a fresh herring salad with mustard
and dill (£7.95). Daily 10am-5pm.
Kingussie
Twelve miles southwest of Aviemore at the head of the Strathspey Valley, KINGUSSIE
(pronounced “king-yoos-ee”) is a pleasant village best known for the free-to-access
ruins of Ruthven Barracks, which stand east across the river on a hillock. The best-
preserved garrison built to pacify the Highlands after the 1715 rebellion, it makes for
great exploring by day and is impressively floodlit at night.
