By bus The most useful local bus route is the #31, which
runs hourly from Aviemore to the Cairn Gorm Mountain
Railway (see p.167) via Rothiemurchus and Loch Morlich.
The #34 service is also handy, running regularly (roughly
hourly) to Grantown via Boat of Garten.

SKIING

experts at G2 Outdoor will provide one-to-one tuition in
the art of telemarking (£120/2hr) and back-country skiing.
In summer, they also run kayaking and canyoning trips.

ment, from ski boots and poles to mountaineering gear,
pay a visit to this friendly and well-stocked shop in the
centre of Aviemore. Daily 9am-5.30pm.
The Ski School In the Day Lodge, near the funicular
railway's base station in the Cairngorm Ski Area
T 08455 191191, W theskischool.co.uk. A good bet for
ski/board rental and lessons, not least because of its
proximity to the funicular, which whizzes skiers up to the
slopes. Courses run mid-Dec-early April.

lodge.org.uk. For a crash course in surviving Scottish
winters, you could do worse than try a week at the National
Outdoor Training Centre, at the east end of Loch Morlich.
This superbly equipped and organized centre (complete
with cosy après-ski bar) offers winter and summer courses
in hillwalking, mountaineering, alpine ski-mountaineering,
avalanche awareness and much more.

HORSERIDING
Alvie Stables 5 miles south of Aviemore, near Kincraig

riding centre set in superb countryside a short drive from
Aviemore, offering 30-minute lessons and longer guided
rides (£25/hr).
WATERSPORTS
Loch Insh Watersports Centre 6 miles up-valley

Offers sailing, windsurfing and canoeing trips and rents
mountain bikes (£19/day), as well as boats for fishing. To
save visitors travelling back and forth from Aviemore,
the centre also offers accommodation (see p.172).
CYCLING
Bothy Bikes 5 Granish Way, Dalfaber, half a mile north

and high-quality (front suspension) bike rental (£20/day),
stop in at Bothy Bikes. Daily 9am-5.30pm.
FISHING

fishing loch, where success is virtually guaranteed. A one-
hour lesson followed by an hour's fishing costs £45. July &
Aug 9.30am-9pm; Sept-June 9.30am-5.30pm.
