In-Depth Information
To get started, you can buy premade packs of sprites. Here are a few examples of web sites where
you can get sprites for free, buy sprites, or hire artists who can create sprites for you:
www.supergameasset.com
www.graphic-buffet.com
www.hireanillustrator.com
http://opengameart.org
www.3dfoin.com
www.content-pack.com
Just like sprites, you can also buy music and sound effects for your games. Take a look at these
web sites:
www.soundrangers.com
www.indiegamemusic.com
www.stereobot.com
http://audiojungle.net
www.arteriamusic.com
https://soundcloud.com
If you've already created a few games using these stock assets, it will be much easier for you to set
up connections with other indie developers. The games you develop will form a portfolio that shows
your capabilities as a game developer.
Working on a Game Production Team
When you're working together with others on a game, you need people with different skills.
Generally, a game production team has a project manager who leads the overall production process,
game designers, level designers, artists, sound artists, testers, and of course programmers.
Sometimes a person fills multiple roles. For example, the project manager can also be the lead game
designer. Testers and programmers are very often the same people.
Peter: “We have many artists, designers, programmers, experts, and Q&A testers.
There is a lot of collaboration. A lot of people are involved in making a game
nowadays.
When a game company grows a lot, one challenge is finding talent. Also, it is
important to stay true to your startup roots, so that you don't become just a big,
slow corporation. Try to keep agility in your company, and keep hierarchies in the
company to a minimum. As they say, culture eats strategy for breakfast. Keep the
startup culture alive, and make sure that you can get stuff done. This holds for many
companies that are growing. The challenge lies in maintaining the mentality to keep
things moving and agile.”
