Security
his chapter provides an introduction to information security and shows how information secu-
rity is necessary for individuals and organizations all over the world. We then delve into some basic
security concepts that are vital in understanding security concepts and practices, which will be
explored throughout our journey into securing Java Web applications. he chapter also describes
some security incidents and attacks that have shaped world and IT security. It is also important to
understand the many myths that surround security. We will discuss some common security myths
and explore the realities that are actually behind these myths.
2.1 Information Security: the need of the Hour
2.1.1 The Need for Information Security
Security is one of the key requirements in the world today. Governments, organizations, and
individuals alike consider security to be a critical facet of a smooth operation. Even individu-
als have a great need for security. All individuals would like to ensure that their bank accounts,
credit cards, and identities remain safe and away from any danger of being stolen and misused.
Organizations in business have a greater need for security. An organization would never want its
customer information or other sensitive data in the hands of a competitor or at risk from corporate
espionage. Needless to say, information security is extremely important for military and defense
organizations. hey would never, in their worst nightmares, want to see a rogue state having access
to key defense secrets.
he stakes are very high for all the entities. What if one discovers that the money that has
been saved for over 25 years was gone in an instant? What if an organization lost its customers
because their information was now in the hands of a competitor? What if terrorists bomb a coun-
try because they were able to gain access to systems containing defense secrets? hese situations
are very real and very intimidating.
