Figure 1.13. With a width of
fifteen miles, Drygalski Ice
Tongue debouches directly
from the East Antarctic Ice
Sheet into the Ross Sea
through a narrow cleft in
the mountains. Cliffs at its
forward edge that are 150
feet high meet a thin layer
of nascent ice as seasonal
ice separates to the south
(left). On January 18,
1902, Scott sailed in along
the fast ice at the upper
right of the image, at the
perimeter of what Shack-
leton would later name
Terra Nova Bay. Discovery
found itself in a corner that
forced a sharp turn to port
(east). As the ship sailed
along the north side of the
ice tongue, the mast on
Discovery was too short
for the men to see over
the cliffs. Edgeworth
David's party crossed
the ice tongue several
miles from its release at
the mountain front late
in 1907 on its traverse to
the Magnetic South Pole.
The bight where the ice
tongue leaves the shore,
aptly named Relief Inlet, is
also the approximate loca-
tion where David's party
rendezvoused with the
Nimrod .
