Conclusion and Outlook
Earth sciences are among the major landscapes inundated by today's Data
Deluge. Arrays tend to be Big, with single objects frequently ranging into
Petabyte and soon Exabyte sizes; for example, the Low-Frequency Array for
radio astronomy (LOFAR) distributed radio telescope consists of hundreds of
antenna stations all over Europe, each of which delivers 3 GB/sec sustained
to the central computing center. Array databases aim at offering fl exible,
scalable storage and retrieval on this information category. Databases add
substantial advantages with their extensibility and scalability mechanisms,
leading to Array Analytics. Several more emerging technologies are on the
table, such as parallelism, cloud paradigms, in situ processing, etc., which
are presented as potential solutions to the data tsunami challenge. Although
“no one size fi ts all” (Stonebraker and Cetintemel 2005) is a commonly heard
response nowadays, research efforts on seamless integration of emerging
analytics technologies receive high attention.
