The most important fundamental and functional characteristics
concerning broadness and high level of applicability, such as being based on
an algebra, defi ning a query language, being able to handle multidimensional
data, applying specifi c tiling strategies, optimizing queries and integrating
SQL into the system, are summarized. The systems which are considered
to be representative are contained in the table by highlighting their
characteristics. Hence, a comparison of the listed systems with respect to
these characteristics can be directly derived from the table.
In Fig. 1 the time line and the timely duration of different systems
handling array data are presented. Some of the systems are the same ones
from the characteristics table and some other systems are also mentioned.
The additional systems are not reference systems, but they contributed to
one or other aspect of handling raster data.
The ArcSDE (Spatial Database Engine) 9 technology of ESRI
(Environmental Systems Research Institute) manages spatial data in a
relational database management system and enables it to be accessed by
ArcGIS clients. It provides a framework to support long transactions, which
facilitates the versioned editing environment in multiuser geodatabases.
Its raster capabilities are constrained to 2D.
A Query (Lerner and Shasha 2003) is an algebra and a query language,
which supports order as a fi rst class algebraic concept from-the-ground-up.
