This chapter, therefore, focuses on Array Analytics approaches and
technologies. The state of the art in Array Analytics will be discussed,
together with research examples 1 for preparing the analytics in the era of
Big Data.
Array Analytics History
Support for massive arrays in the dimension of Petabytes has long been
neglected by the database community; Figure 1 gives a schematic overview of
important representatives. PICDMS (Chock and Cardenas 1983) considered
arrays, but only in a very specialized manner (as stacks of 2D raster maps)
and without dedicated architecture. EXTRA-EXCESS (Vandenberg 1991)
was an early attempt to incorporate arrays into a database type system.
Since a few years, Array Database research has gained impetus,
following a fi rst Array Database Workshop (Baumann et al. 2011). The most
advanced ones are picked and presented with their relevant characteristics
as in Table 1.
