It should be apparent to the reader that a com-
plete evaluation of these assumptions may
require substantially more effort than actual
application of the methods. Several studies
have applied methods described in this chap-
ter to generate estimates of base flow over
large areas such as the upper Mississippi River
watershed (Arnold
et al
.,
2000
) and the con-
terminous United States (Wolock,
2003
). Such
studies may provide insight into regional pat-
terns of base flow but not without ignoring
many assumptions.
