An error occurred while renewing interface local area connection: an operation was
attempted on something that is not a socket. Unable to contact driver Error code 2.
The operation failed since no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation.

When these occur, you can use
netdiag
from the Windows Support Tools to confirm
Winsock's integrity by using the
/test:winsock /v
switches.
(
/v
will produce more complete
debugging output than running the command with only the
/test:
switch.)
Once you've confirmed that you are experiencing Winsock corruption, you can use
netsh
to reset it. Be aware, however, that certain applications such as antivirus scanners, third-party
firewalls, and proxy clients may begin to malfunction after performing this reset. If this occurs,
simply reinstall the third-party application from its installation media to return it to working
order.

9-6. Repairing a Network Connection
Problem
You want to repair a Windows Server 2003 network connection as part of the network trouble-
shooting process.
Solution
Using a Graphical User Interface
1.
Open the Network Connections applet.
2.
Double-click on the Local Area Connection icon.
3.
Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and select Properties.
4.
Click on the Support tab, and select Repair.
5.
Click Close when you're done.
