5-3. Enabling and Configuring a Demand-Dial Interface
Problem
You want to create a demand-dial connection to connect two routers, such as in a central-to-
branch office scenario.
Solution
Note If you are in the process of enabling RRAS, you may be creating the demand-dial interface with a
wizard that has automatically started. If that is the case, begin with step 5. Otherwise, start the wizard manu-
ally as described here.
1.
Start the Routing and Remote Access Services administrative console from the
Administrative Tools folder in the Start menu, or directly from %systemroot%\system32\
rrasmgmt.msc .
2.
Expand the console tree and right-click on the server object.
3.
Select the General tab and verify that LAN and Demand-Dial Routing is enabled. If it is
not enabled, enable it and restart the service when prompted.
4.
Right-click the Interfaces node in the left pane, and select New Demand-Dial Interface
to start the wizard. Click the Next button to proceed through the steps of the wizard.
5.
In the Interface Name window, enter a convenient name for the interface. A good
choice may be the name of the company or organization to which you are connecting.
Click the Next button to proceed.
6.
In the Connection Type window, select the option to Connect Using a Modem, ISDN
Adapter, or Other Physical Device or to Connect Using PPP Over Ethernet (PPPoE) and
click the Next button to proceed.
7.
Depending on your choice in step 6, do one of the following and click the Next button
to proceed:
￿ If you chose to use a modem, ISDN adapter, or other physical device, select the
appropriate device and enter the phone number or address of the service to which
you need to connect.
￿ If you chose to use PPPoE, you can optionally provide a service name or let Windows
automatically provide one for you.
8.
In the Protocols and Security window, select the check boxes that apply to your situation:
￿ Route IP Packets on This Interface: Select this option to enable routing over this
interface.
￿ Add a User Account So a Remote Router Can Dial In: This option is enabled only if
you chose to use a modem or other physical device. Select this option to provide
credentials that remote routers will use when connecting to this interface.
