In the Connection Type window, select the option to Connect Using Virtual Private
Networking (VPN), and click the Next button to proceed.

In the VPN Type window, select the type of VPN interface to create, and then click the
Next button to proceed. The interface options are:
Automatic Selection (RRAS will select the protocol for you)
Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)
Layer-2 Tunneling Protocol (recommended for a higher level of security)

In the Destination Address window, enter the DNS name or the public IP address of the
host to which you want to connect. Click the Next button to proceed.

In the Protocols and Security window, select the check box to Route IP Packets on This
Interface. Because credentials must be specified to make the connection, you can also
select the check box to Add a User Account So a Remote User Can Dial In. Click the Next
button to proceed.

In the Static Routes for Remote Networks window, create the static route for the remote
network. The two required values are the Destination and the Network Mask. You may
also add a Metric if you have multiple static routes defined on your server.

Note
The Destination represents the remote network, not just the remote host. For example, if the remote
host is at
192.168.20.2
on a network (subnet) mask of
255.255.255.0
, you would enter the remote
network as
192.168.20.0
.

In the Dial-In Credentials window, enter the credentials, including domain, account,
and password that you will pass for authentication to the remote server. If you enabled
the option to add a user account in step 15 of this section, the wizard will create the
account on your server at this time. Click the Next button to proceed.

Click the Finish button to complete the wizard.

Repeat steps 1-18 on the remote server as well. Make certain to enable the same
protocols and security settings.

After the remote access servers have been configured at both sites, test your connection
by issuing a
PING
command from one server to the other. Ping first by IP address, and if
that is successful, ping by DNS or NetBIOS name to test name resolution.
You can access configuration parameters and management tasks by right-clicking on the
interface that you just created and selecting the following options:
Set Credentials:
Modifies the credentials passed by the local server to the remote server.
Connect:
Establishes the site-to-site link.
