4-14. Configuring Connection Profiles for End Users Using the
Connection Manager Administration Kit (CMAK)
Problem
You want to create a profile or package that contains preconfigured connectivity parameters
for end users to connect to your remote access server.
Solution
The Connection Manager Administration Kit (CMAK) provides an easy-to-use wizard that will
build a profile that you can then distribute to your end users. This profile will allow the users to
connect to your remote access server using settings and information that you have already
specified for them.
Before you can start using the CMAK, you must verify that it is installed on your server. You
can easily check this in the Add/Remove Windows Components applet (within Management
and Monitoring Tools); you should also have a shortcut icon located in your Administrative
Tools folder.
Once you have verified that it is installed, proceed to build the profile by starting the wizard,
clicking the Next button, and going through each of the following screens. Much of the infor-
mation in the screens is optional.
1.
Service Profile Selection: Select the option for New Profile if you are creating a new profile.
If you are editing an existing one, select that option as well as the appropriate profile.
Click the Next button to proceed.
2.
Service and File Names: Enter the Service Name, which is just a friendly name for the
profile. For example, enter Widgets Plus, Inc. Also enter a name that will be used for the
resulting profile file. The name must be eight characters or fewer. For example, you
could call it MyWidget . Click the Next button to proceed.
3.
Realm Name: Enter a domain name, realm name, or domain suffix if your remote
access server requires that it be entered. For example, you could enter Widgets\ to
precede the user name, or @widgets.com to follow it. Click the Next button to proceed.
4.
Merging Profile Information: Merge information from other profiles that you've
already configured, if desired, by selecting the existing profile and clicking the Add
button. Click the Next button to proceed.
5.
VPN Support: If this profile will connect you to a VPN server, select either the Phone
Book from This Profile and/or the Phone Books from the Merged Profiles check boxes.
Enter the full DNS name of the VPN server or its IP address, such as remote.widgets.com .
If desired, also set the option to force the same logon credentials for both VPN and dial-
up connections. Click the Next button to proceed.
6.
VPN Entries: Edit the current VPN entry or create a new one by clicking the Edit or New
button, respectively. Then configure the parameters in each of the following three tabs.
