Database Reference
In-Depth Information
In PerformancePoint Services, you build your dashboards in a tool called Dashboard
Designer. Dashboard Designer contains a good query builder tool that allows the
user to create dynamic dashboard elements. Dashboard Designer does not integ-
rate with a source control system but it uses the SharePoint capabilities for handling
versions. Through the tool you can also choose if you want to deploy dashboards to
the production server or to a test server. However, the tool is quite hard to learn; in
order to create a dashboard, you have to focus a lot on the sizing of the dashboard
elements. A user that builds a dashboard also has to test the dashboard using dif-
ferent screen resolutions to make sure that the dashboard displays as intended in
the web browser. If you look at the tool from the developer's standpoint, it also lacks
some crucial functionality; the most apparent is that it does not integrate with an IDE.
Dashboards that you create in PerformancePoint Services can contain assets from
other tools as well. These assets can include Reporting Services reports or Excel
spreadsheets. This is something that allows reporting elements to be reused. Per-
formancePoint Services also has an advanced scorecard component that allows
users to comment on KPIs. KPIs could either be created as a part of Analysis Ser-
vices cube or in PerformancePoint Service directly. In most cases, you should add
the intelligence on the lowest level possible, as this allows for more tools to consume
the data without the need to recreate the logic several times.
