In a lot of BI solutions, Reporting Services is the main tool used to provide end-user
reporting. This allows for great reports with pixel-perfect appearance; however, the
tool is really targeted at the standard reports. Standard reports are fairly static and
are used frequently by many users. In most situations, static standard reports need
to be complemented with an end user tool that allows users to create their own re-
ports—a tool that allows them to analyze information in a more interactive way.
SharePoint PerformancePoint Services
Another more developer-focused query tool is PerformancePoint Services in
SharePoint. It is only delivered through SharePoint and requires an enterprise client-
access license. The tool is targeted for dashboard development and not as a report-
ing tool in the common sense. The difference between a report and a dashboard
is that dashboards typically show data on an aggregated level compared to reports
that, in most cases, show data on a more detailed level.
