In-Depth Information
Note
For an in-depth description on how the storage in Tabular mode works, see the
webcast on Channel 9 at http://media.ch9.ms/ch9/19c6/30cc1b48-0d89-43cb-
b20c-7ba64a4019c6/DBI414_mid.mp4 .
In the first version of the new in-memory engine, it could only be created through the
PowerPivot add-in in Excel. PowerPivot in Excel is targeted towards business users
with analytical skills but are short of some capabilities that are needed to develop a
true enterprise analytical model.
Note
In PowerPivot, security can only be defined on the file level. This means that if
you have access to the workbook containing the tabular model, you can access
all data within the model. In the 32-bit version of PowerPivot for Excel, you also
have a limitation on the amount of data a model can contain. This limitation is
2 GB; in the 64-bit version, no such limitation exists. More information about
this can be found at http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/excel-help/data-model-
specification-and-limits-HA102837464.aspx .
With SQL Server 2012, Microsoft added a server version of the xVelocity analytical
engine that contains the features needed to build real enterprise models. This ver-
sion is installed when choosing tabular mode during the installation of Analysis Ser-
vices.
