after the superlative lobster soup (1100kr) and fresh
halibut. It's also the place to come for minke whale kebabs

restaurants in Reykjavík, divided into quaint, cluttered,
grandmotherly rooms. Daring and delicious cuisine,
featuring everything from honey-sautéed wolf-fish to
smoked guillemot with horseradish. Mains 3800-4700kr;
the three-course surprise menu is 5900kr. Mon-Fri
6-10pm, Sat & Sun 6-11pm.

RESTAURANTS
Since there are restaurants dotted around the whole of
Reykjavík's city centre, walking between them can take a
fair amount of time and effort. For easy reference, we've
listed them in two main areas: Lækjartorg and around; and
those located on or near Laugavegur.
LÆKJARTORG AND AROUND
Einar Ben Veltusundi 1 T 511 5090, W einarben.is;
map p.57. Named after the poet Einar Benediktsson, this
elegant place is heavy with chandeliers and heavy red
drapes. The lamb loin with butternut purée (5400kr), and
cod with celeriac and spinach (4200kr) are both superb.

Fish Market Aðalstræti 12 T 578 8877, W fishmarket
.is; map p.57. Smart, stylish restaurant heavy on fake
greenery, specializing in fish given an Asian twist - try the
salted cod with lime (4400kr) or the minke whale sashimi
(2300kr). All produce is bought direct from Icelandic
fishermen and farmers. Mon-Fri 11.30am-2pm &
6-11.30pm, Sat & Sun 6-11.30pm.
Ì Hornið Hafnarstræti 15 T 551 3340, W hornid.is;
map p.57. Long-time favourite with young Reykjavíkers,
who flock here for the excellent pizzas (around 2240kr) and
pasta (around 2450kr). They also do a good range of meat
and fish dishes, with a daily fish special (3450kr) and a
succulent lamb fillet (4850kr). Daily 11am-11.30pm.
Ì Jómfrúin Lækjargata 4 T 551 0100, W jomfruin.is;
map p.57. Popular Danish-influenced place specializing in
smørrebrød (open rye sandwiches), priced at 1500-2400kr.
Pick the fillings from a range including smoked salmon, caviar,
shrimps, asparagus, smoked eel and scrambled egg. Fried
plaice (1490kr) is the house speciality. Daily 11am-6pm.
Ì Lækjarbrekka Bankastræti 2 T 551 4430,
W laekjarbrekka.is; map p.57. Old wooden building with
period furnishings, refined atmosphere and fabulous
seafood. The langoustine feast, for example, includes cream
of lobster soup, a trio of broiled, pan-fried and deep-fried
lobster and chocolate skyr mousse (8500kr). The lamb feast
(7500kr) is equally mouthwatering. Daily 11.30am-11pm.
Restaurant Reykjavík Vesturgata 2 T 552 3030,
W restaurantreykjavik.is; map p.57. Although this
restaurant serves a wide and accomplished menu, it's best
visited for its justifiably renowned nightly fish buffet
(5400kr), which features all manner of smoked, marinated,
baked and gratinated fishy treats, plus a wide selection of
Icelandic cheeses. Daily 6pm-late.

LAUGAVEGUR AND AROUND
Á Næstu Grösum Laugavegur 20B T 552 8410,
W anaestugrosum.is; map p.57. This place has been
serving tasty vegetarian food for years, with most of the
organic ingredients sourced from Iceland. There's always
one vegan and one wheat-free dish on the menu, and a full
meal here can cost less than 2000kr.

Ì Friðrik V Laugavegur 60 T 461 5775, W fridrikv.is;
map pp.54-55. Run by the ebullient Friðrik, who trained
at London's River Café , the tasting menu is new Nordic
cooking at its most inventive: Icelandic herbs and flavours
blending perfectly with the best of the Mediterranean.

Grænn Kostur Skólavördustígur 8B T 552 2028,
W graennkostur.is; map p.57. This place wins no prizes
for its views of the nearby multistorey car park, but wins
hands down for its changing menu of vegan treats: dish of
the day is just 1590kr, and their excellent home-made
cakes are a must. Mon-Sat 11.30am-9pm, Sun 1-9pm.
Kitchen-Eldhús Laugavegur 60A T 517 7795, W kitchen
-eldhus.is; map pp.54-55. This Nepalese restaurant is
finally getting a reputation for serving some seriously tasty
dishes from the subcontinent: mains, such as chicken bhuna
and any number of lamb and vegetarian specialities, go for
2890-3590kr. Mon-Fri 11.30am-2.30pm & 5.30-10pm,
Sat & Sun 5.30-10pm.
Mamma Steina Skólavörðustígur 23 T 571 1289; map
p.57. Named after the owner's grandmother, Steina, this is
the place to come for old-fashioned, no-nonsense Icelandic
home-cooking such as the filling lamb soup and the
delicious fishballs, which have fed generations. Mains go
for around 1200kr. Daily 11am-8pm.
Ì Rosso Pomodoro Laugavegur 40 T 561 0500,
W rossopomodoro.is; map p.57. A genuinely good southern
Italian restaurant, drawing inspiration from the cuisine of
Naples. Pizzas and pasta dishes go for around 2550kr, salads
start at 2490kr and grilled chicken with Parma ham,
mozzarella and red wine sauce is 3690kr. Mon-Thurs
