transportation
hub; the airport has fl ights to
Reykjavík, the international port of
Seyðisfj örður
is nearby, and anyone travelling
by bus has to stop here for at least as long as it takes to change services. It's also a
springboard to the estuarine grasslands of
Héraðsfl oí
, as well as the adjacent
Lögurinn lake and highland plateau around Snæfell and Kárahnjúkar, and the
northern East Fjords.

Egilsstaðir's main distraction is the
Minjasafn Austurlands
, a museum whose single-
room exhibition provides a potted history of the region via battered farming
implements, saggy woollen clothes and old riding saddles. Th e highlight is a relocated
traditional
turf house
- minus the turf - whose cramped, wood-framed interior
would defi nitely have become too cosy during the long winter nights. Every year
from mid-June there's a diff erent local
archeology exhibition
too, featuring artefacts
uncovered from local digs before they're shipped off to the National Museum's
storeroom in Reykjavík - previous displays have been about Viking graves and the
vanished monastery at Skriðuklaustur (see p.279).
