Youth hostel Stórholt 1 T 462 3657, W hostel.is. The
65 beds at this hostel, 1.5km out of town back towards
Reykjavík along Glerárgata, fill quickly thanks to the low
price - the green, leafy location is an added bonus. There

EATING, DRINKING AND NIGHTLIFE
Unless you're arrived directly from Reykjavík, you'll feel quite dizzy at the wide choice of places to eat in Akureyri. Thanks to
the town's small university and its role as a commercial centre for the entire north of the country, there's a fair choice of
cafés and restaurants , and even the odd bar or two - so indulge yourself before moving on.

CAFÉS AND RESTAURANTS
Bautinn Hafnarstræti 92 T 462 1818. Always busy with
both locals and visitors, this is essentially a cheap and
cheerful dine-and-dash type of place, and is best for a
quick burger and chips (from 1570kr), or fish-and-
something from 3250kr. Daily 9am-11pm.
Bláa Kannan Hafnarstræti 96 T 461 4600. Housed in
an old wooden building on the main street, this
atmospheric place with grand, antique chandeliers serves
the best coffee in Akureyri, and is popular with local
shoppers. They also do great cakes, bagels and panini.
Mon-Fri 9am-11.30pm, Sat & Sun 10am-11.30pm.
Greifinn Glerárgata 20 T 460 1600. This pizza, pasta
and Tex-Mex joint is worth seeking out for its lively
atmosphere; it's the most popular restaurant with locals
and is usually busy. Large pizzas from 2170kr, or fajitas for
3690kr. Mon-Thurs & Sun 11.30am-9.30pm, Fri & Sat
11.30am-10pm.
Kristjáns Hafnarstræti 108 T 460 5930. At lunchtime,
look no further than this bakery on the main street which
serves a no-nonsense, inexpensive set lunch dish for just
1350kr. There's also a decent salad bar, pizza slices and soup
of the day. Mon-Fri 8am-5.30pm, Sat 10am-4pm.
Krua Siam Strandgata 13 T 466 3800. Thai restaurant
serving reasonable if not overly authentic dishes. The
weekday lunch buffet for 1650kr including a drink is good
value; otherwise mains, such as pad Thai, are 1500-1900kr.
Vegetarian options available. Mon-Fri 11.30am-1.30pm
& 5-9.30pm, Sat & Sun 5-9.30pm.
La Vita è Bella Hafnarstræti 92 T 461 5858. The most
authentic Italian restaurant in town, with pizzas from
2340kr and pasta dishes from 2150kr. There's also a choice
of good meat and fish mains, such as grilled salmon, from
3810kr. Daily 6pm-late.
RUB23 Kaupvangsstræti 6 T 462 2223. A stylish sushi
restaurant offering a wide variety of fish, all rubbed in a
secret blend of spices, seeds and herbs. Fourteen pieces
cost 3790kr, or try a mixed seafood platter for 4790kr.

5-30pm-late.
Ì Strikið Skipagata 14 T 462 7100. A deservedly
popular top-floor brasserie with an open-air terrace
offering superb views of Akureyri. Reckon on 2000-2600kr
BARS
Brygghúsbarinn Kaupvangsstræti 23 T 662 7011.
Snug and compact bar which serves all five of the different
beers made by the Kaldi microbrewery in nearby Dalvík. It's
a great place to strike up a conversation and is the nearest
thing Akureyri has to a British pub. Mon-Thurs & Sun
6pm-1am, Fri & Sat 6pm-3am.
Café Amour Ráðhústorg 9 T 461 3030. All Nordic
minimalism, this place quite fancies itself, with leather
chairs and wooden floors creating a laid-back, trendy
atmosphere. It's popular with Akureyri's young things, who
congregate here from early evening onwards. Mon-Thurs
2pm-1am, Fri 2pm-4am, Sat 11am-4am, Sun
11am-1am.
Götubarinn Hafnarstræti 96 T 462 4747. Akureyri's
newest and trendiest bar, perfectly located on the main
shopping street. Small it certainly is, but that doesn't stop
crowds of people squeezing in between the chunky
wooden walls for a beer. Mon-Thurs & Sun 6pm-1am,
Fri & Sat 6pm-3am.
Græni Hatturinn Hafnarstræti 96 T 461 4646. A
popular, evenings-only pub in the basement of the Bláa
Kannan , and good for a beer or three. Entrance is down the
steps in the small lane off Hafnarstræti. Daily 6pm-late.
CLUBS
Ka Akureyri Strandgata 7 T 461 3999. This popular
bar mutates into a club (with occasional live music) at
weekends, and starts to fill up from mid-evening onwards.

Pósthúsbarinn Skipagata 10 T 866 6186. A new
nightclub and lounge bar housed in Akureyri's former post
o ce and attracting a young crowd of twenty- and
thirtysomethings. The music's usually a mix of 1980s and
90s classic hits which the crowd thrill to. Thurs-Sun
11pm-late.
Sjallinn Geislagata 14 T 462 2770. Dance club where
you'll find virtually every young person in Akureyri on
weekend evenings grooving to the latest tunes or to live
music. Thurs-Sun 11pm-late.
