In-Depth Information
the geomorphological record when compared to one in
the opposite direction.
Other studies have shown that it can be exceedingly
difficult to determine the relative contributions of temper-
ature (via evaporation) and precipitation changes to the
spread of aridity (Williams, 1985). However, perhaps of
overwhelming importance is to recognise the dangers of
accepting the simple replacement of a climatic model for
the Quaternary, which equated glacial periods with plu-
vials by an equally simple one that links the growth of ice
in high latitudes to the spread of aridity in the tropics.
Better dating resolution and an increase in palaeoenvi-
ronmental evidence has since highlighted both the spatial
and temporal complexity of environmental responses to
climate variations both within and between hemispheres
over the last glacial period.
