Figure 3.2 A 60 m high exposure of the internal structure of a sand dune in RAK, UAE. Sampling through the exposed units
for OSL dating will reveal the history of accumulation of this ridge during the Late Quaternary. Such an exposure, due to sand
quarrying for construction, is unusual: normally dating dune history requires sampling via drilling, when the internal structure is
not revealed.
Figure 3.3 Road cutting through a low linear dune in the Strzelecki desert reveals the internal dune structure, including weak
palaeosols, which aid paleoenvironmental interpretation of dune history.
