In-Depth Information
In contrast to the mature pavements of the Cima volcanic field, young well-developed stone mosaics on the
Pisgah basalt flow lack underlying salt and dust. Williams and Zimbelman (1994) propose that sheetfloods play a
dominant role in the incipient growth of small pavement areas (about 1 m 2 ). Aeolian processes do not appear to
affect these early stages of development. Such pavements may represent an initial substage of accretionary mantle
development, wherein the mosaic is formed prior to soil development, rather than contemporaneously with mantle
accretion.
