12.12 Summary
Utilities for automated physical database design are based on advanced technology with
considerable sophistication. Even so, these technologies are maturing, and for the
moment, most recommendations from these utilities should be reviewed before being
directly applied to a system. If you are the Gary Kasparov of physical database design
chances are you don't need to use these advisors. However, if you're mortal then you
may just find these tools have something to offer because of their ability to evaluate
thousands of alternatives and complex combinations that human designers will not.
Even for the experienced database designers these utilities have been found to be useful,
particularly as a starting point for new ideas.
