Determining the order of quality control
steps
In order to give structure to the steps that we needed to take in this chapter, we have
naturally had to perform our quality control tweaks in a specific order, taking renders
of each step along the way so as to evaluate its effect before moving on. It does need
to be noted though that the order in which we have taken these steps here is by no
means a required nor sometimes efficient way in which to proceed.
For instance, rather than waiting until the end of the quality control process to balance
out the sampling load, we may find it beneficial to add the Sample Rate VFB channel
right from the start, leaving the less noise intensive GI clean up until later in the pro-
cess. This would mean that subsequent test renders have already been optimized to
deal with noise-related issues. It would also mean that we could combine tweaks to
image sampling and materials, which would require us to take fewer test renders than
we have here.
Ultimately, the type of work we do as well as the particular way in which our own brain
prefers to work will help us settle on a workflow that is optimum for us. As long as all
of the required quality control checks are in place, the order in which we do them can
be one of personal choice.
