In-Depth Information
opportunity to go grab some refreshments as a means of separating them out in our
minds. By deliberately giving our brain an information gathering focus, we will typ-
ically find that we start to notice all kinds of subtle details and nuances that would
otherwise have passed us by had we tried to gather information on both lighting and
materials at the same time. When trying to create photorealism, of course, such nu-
ances and details can turn out to be very important indeed.
Note
Of course, the point of this exercise isn't to avoid any mention of lighting while
gathering material reference nor vice versa. Instead, the idea would be to keep
in mind that any mention of light during the material phase should be focused
specifically on questions regarding how and why the surface material is reacting
to light in the way that it does.
As you probably want to go ahead and just get on with creating some V-Ray ma-
terials at this point, I am going to keep my definition of our goals in the scene to a
minimum. I will adopt an approach that assumes we have been given very little time
in which to get our material work done, and so can only afford to create a general
overview regarding what we want to do with our scene materials.
Defining the materials
Given the type of space we are working with here and keeping in mind that this scene
has been designed in many respects to function as a training environment, we will
attempt to create as many hard surface material types as possible. However, we will
keep everything within the confines of surfaces that we would expect to find in this
kind of setting, focusing on working with the parameters and features that will give
the materials a realistic (and therefore photographic) look and feel.
At the same time, we also need to make certain that the materials we create are
adding a definite feel or mood to the space. Clean, light, and airy are all terms that
come to my mind as I think about the kind of look that would go with the lighting
scheme we already have in place. It would also be nice if we could possibly add just
a hint of individualism to the space, breaking away from uniformity wherever we have
the option.
