We could, if we wanted, make use of the GCanyon_C_YumaPoint_8k
JPEG file, but as I would prefer to have the extra dynamic range available
in the HDR version of the file, that is the one that I will be working with.
4. With that selected, make sure that the Color space dropdown is set to
Gamma Corrected and that the Gamma value to the right is set at 1.2 .
5. Next, in the UVW section of the bitmap controls, set the UVW Type to
UVWGenEnvironment ; make sure that the Mapping Type is set to Spher-
ical and also set Horizontal rotation to 215 .
6. Finally, click on Ok to exit the editor; set the Reflection/refraction (back-
ground) multiplier value to 22 ; and from the POV Shot - Looking at the Sky
scene view, take a render.
Now the image we have used for the environment backdrop here is essentially the
same HDRI as the one used to create the sky lighting in the scene, but that doesn't
necessarily have to be the case. All that really matters is that the look of the sky in
the background image matches the mood or feeling seen in our environment lighting
setup.
In all honesty though, the idea of including the environment background in the final
render itself is an approach that I would very rarely take. My personal preference
would be to instead add this during the post-production phase where I have a much
greater level of control over how the image integrates with the lighting seen in the
render. Still, it is good to know that these things can be done in V-Ray, should the
need arise.
