Ambient occlusion
There is, however, a warning that we need to sound in connection with our shadow
observation and reference gathering work, and that is to avoid the trap of looking
closely at only the directional shadows found in an environment. What are referred
to in CG as occlusion shadows can themselves be extremely important to the pho-
tographic quality of a rendered image and will in fact oftentimes make up the lar-
ger percentage of shadows found in a given environment. The problem is, we don't
always recognize that they are there, although the following woodland photograph
would look very different if they weren't:
