Note that data for a treemap may not be formatted as a set of nodes and
a set of edges. Some tools use a flattened hierarchy, with each column
indicating a successive level in the hierarchy.
Hierarchical Pie Chart
The authors were once working on a project for a Fortune 500 financial
firm. The top executive for capital markets said to us, “I want a treemap so
I can see what our whole portfolio looks like. But it can't be a treemap—50
percent of the people have no idea what it is, and the other 50 percent
love them. I need something that is intuitive for everyone.” The authors
createdavisualizationbasedonahierarchicalpiechartthatwassuccessfully
deployed to all the users.
Also known as a sunburst chart , the hierarchical pie chart is a close
cousin of the treemap. A treemap focuses on the leaves of the tree (the
boxes), and the intermediate levels of the tree are compressed into thin
